*Wintergreen is actually the word that was once used to describe plants that remain green throughout the winter. Today we use the word evergreen. Wintergreens do have this characteristic—remaining green year-round. Wintergreen is used extensively in the flavoring of products like toothpaste and chewing gum. Despite this, Wintergreen essential oil should never be ingested. Because of the high level of salicylates, one fluid ounce (30 ml) of wintergreen is the equivalent of 171 adult aspirins.
