*Nutmeg is a towering tree that can grow to be 80 feet tall. It is native to the islands north of Australia—known as the “Spice Islands”. The Nutmeg is an egg-shaped seed about 1.2 inches long and can only be harvested about seven to nine years after planting. The essential oil comes from grinding the seed into a powder and then distilling it. Nutmeg trade has an especially tragic history. In 1621 a battle was waged for control of the nutmeg trades. In the end, only about 5% of the native people remained in the Spice Islands—the rest were either killed, fled, or sold into slavery.
