Black Pepper

Black pepper is native to India. It comes from a flowering vine that produces a small fruit. When the fruit is nearly ripe, it is sundried and in the process turns black on the outside of the fruit—creating a peppercorn. Black pepper trade is the largest spice trade in the world and has been for hundreds, perhaps even thousands of years. In ancient times, it was used as currency and in fact Rome paid a portion of a ransom (3,000 pounds worth) in black pepper at the siege of Alaric the Visigoth in the 5th century.
